Today I will tell you about the experience of sleeping in a hotel capsule in Such, it's worth it? I tell you everything you need to know before.

One of our adventures during a trip to Japan long ago, it was sleeping one night in a capsule hotel. These are very famous in Such, since they are used by travelers who do not mind sharing social areas such as bathrooms, showers, work areas or eating areas.

Staying in a capsule hotel in Such it can be a unique and different experience to what can be found in other places. These hotels are especially popular in Japan, where space is a limited resource and accommodation can be expensive.

Stay in a capsule hotel

We go fully to the recommendations and experience in general, for the hotel where we are staying called Bay Hotel Ginza (no longer exists) that due to its location it was convenient close to a subway (essential to visit Japan).

If you travel with normal luggage (a 23kg suitcase) or bigger, it is advisable to have a backpack or a suitcase no bigger than that with clothes to change, and personal toiletries, since once you have checked in you have to leave the large suitcase in assigned lockers or in a space designated by the hotel itself.

Men's capsules are separate from women's. In our case the floor 2 it was for men and the floor 4 was women. Each floor is opened only with a card assigned with the number of the capsule and additionally a key to a small locker in which shoes are left to exchange for sandals to enter the hotel areas.

General view of one of the several capsule halls. Everybody leave their slippers (that the hotel gives you) outside the cubicle.

Already inside the hotel area, a second locker is assigned, with the same capsule number, where one picks up a pajama kit, towels and there is always a free items bar (toothbrush, hairbrush, rasuradora, etc.) near the hallway near the showers and toilets.

Imagine that the communal areas are in the surroundings of the capsules. In these places it is allowed to eat, talking on phone, work on the computer etc.. The capsules are located in a more centralized area where it is requested to maintain a lot of silence and it is forbidden to talk or make noise at all out of respect for the people who are resting.

Once clean and in pajamas one enters the corresponding capsule and what is found is a mattress, quilt, pillow, a finite shelf, a socket and machine in the corner where you can turn on the light and control the fan and an alarm.

This is all, no more no less.

If you are claustrophobic, this type of accommodation is not recommended since it is a small space. One closes a partition at the foot of the bed and to sleep it has been said (some users sleep with this screen open).

The noise level in these capsules is low, however if you hear when other people enter, come out, roncan o tocen. The truth is almost like sleeping in a communal room… The screen of each capsule is only for privacy.

When checking out, the best recommendation is to do it very early in the morning when the bathrooms and showers are completely clear.. There is a more sense of privacy, same if you sacrifice a couple of hours of sleep. One leaves used pajamas and towels in designated places, collect your belongings from the lockers, leave the key and card at reception and continue with the trip.

For those who stay one more night, They are asked to leave their capsules between 10am and 4pm and not leave anything personal in them, as these are the hours in which cleaning services are available..

General considerations

  • In a capsule hotel, instead of a conventional room, is housed in an individual capsule that is usually small, but comfortable and equipped with what is necessary for a short stay. Each capsule usually has a bed, luz, electrical outlets, and a television or radio.
  • The bathrooms and showers are shared and located in a common area, as well as other facilities such as living rooms or relaxation areas.
  • The cost of staying in a capsule hotel in Tokyo can vary depending on the size and location of the hotel, as well as the season in which you travel.
  • Usually, you can find options from about 2.000 a 5.000 yen per night (about 20 a 50 American dollars). It's important to put attention on, although the rate is cheaper than that of a conventional hotel, space is limited and may not be suitable for people who prefer more privacy or space.
  • Some capsule hotels may have age or gender restrictions, since some are designed only for men or only for women (important to review this before booking).

In conclusion, staying in a capsule hotel in Tokyo can be an interesting and different experience, especially if you are traveling alone or looking for a cheaper accommodation option. Nevertheless, it is important to consider space constraints and shared facilities before booking a pod.

  1. It would be interesting to have this type of accommodation at the Quito airport (that already exists in airports such as Mexico City and Bangkok) for travelers staying overnight at the airport with connections the next morning. On my last trip with Latam from Miami to Quito, I noticed that there were several passengers on my flight with connections early in the morning to Manta and Cuenca who chose to sleep in the airport chairs.. This would be a good alternative.

    1. Hello JC, it is a very interesting idea. The closest thing we have is the Layover Quito that is at the Airport in the shopping center, where you can spend a few hours resting before your flight. they are not capsules, but in the sense of use, is the closest we have.
