Boeing is expanding its ecoDemonstrator flight test program to further accelerate innovation for sustainability and safety.
The company announced its plan 2023 to evaluate 19 technologies in the Boeing 777 ecoDemonstrator, while adding “Explorer” aircraft that will focus testing on specific technologies.
El primer Boeing ecoDemonstrator Explorer, a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, will participate in an operational efficiency exercise in June 2023 as an addition to the plans of the 777.
The ecoDemonstrator team grows
The first ecoDemonstrator Explorer, a 787-10 Dreamliner, will conduct flight tests in June from Seattle to Such, Singapore and Bangkok to demonstrate how navigation coordination across global airspace jurisdictions can improve operational efficiency, which can reduce the use of combustible and the emissions of an airplane in up to 10%. Using today's onboard capabilities, Boeing and air navigation service providers (ANSP) in the USA, Japan, Singapore and Thailand will collectively sequence aircraft routes to achieve optimal flight path in multiple regions, taking into account conditions such as weather, the air traffic and airspace. The airplane will fly with the highest available mixture of sustainable aviation fuel (PURE) on each engine.
On 2023, Boeing will also use its current flagship ecoDemonstrator aircraft, a 777-200IS (extended range), to try 19 technologies that include:
- Sustainable wall panels in the cargo hold that are made with a 40 % of recycled carbon fiber and a 60 % resin made from a bio-based raw material
- A fiber optic fuel quantity sensor compatible with 100% PURE
- An Electronic Flight Bag App with Smart Airport Maps, a Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro component, reducing operational costs and supporting safe taxi operations with contextual airport data representation
- For all flight tests, the aircraft will fly with the highest combination of SAF available locally
Since its initial flights in 2012, the program ecoDemonstrator from Boeing has accelerated innovation by taking new technologies out of the lab and testing them in an operational environment. Including the plan 2023, the program will have tried around 250 technologies to help decarbonize aviation, improve operational efficiency, improve passenger safety and experience. Approximately one-third of the technologies tested have progressed into consumer products and services. Boeing.
