Airbus made the first flight of a A380 propelled 100% with 27 tons of PURE – Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
the test plane A380 by Airbus, MSN 1, took off from Toulouse airport, France, at 08:43 of friday 25 of March. The flight lasted about three hours, operando un motor Rolls-Royce Trent 900 with 100% sustainable aviation fuel.
Total Energies provided 27 tons of PURE unmixed for this flight. The SAF produced in Normandy, circle of Le Havre, France, was made from esters and hydroprocessed fatty acids(HEFA), without aromatic compounds or sulfur, and mainly composed of used cooking oil, as well as other waste fats. A second flight is planned, with the same plane, from Toulouse to Nice airport, the 29 of March, to test the use of SAF during takeoff and landing.
This is the third type of aircraft Airbus who flies with SAF to 100% during 12 months; the first was an Airbus A350 in March 2021 followed by an A319neo single-aisle aircraft in October 2021.
Increasing the use of SAF remains a key path to achieving the industry's ambition of net zero carbon emissions for 2050. The key statistics outlined in the Waypoint report 2050 indicate that SAF could contribute between 53% and the 71% of carbon reductions required.
All the planes of Airbus are currently certified to fly with a mix of up to a 50% of SAF mixed with kerosene. The goal is to achieve certification of the 100% SAF at the end of this decade.
The plane A380 used during the test is the same aircraft that was recently revealed as the Demonstrator Airbus ZEROe, a flying testbed for future technologies critical to bringing the world's first zero-emission aircraft to market for 2035.
