Aeroméxico suspends flights to Quito

Una aerolínea más presenta modificaciones en su operación a Ecuador, and so Aeromexico sum up to Viva Aerobus, Conviasa, JetBlue and Wingo among airlines that have reduced, suspended or completely canceled their flights to our country.

The specific reasons for the suspension have not been disclosed by Aeromexico. Nevertheless, Among the factors that we can think of is the closure of the Embassy of Mexico in Quito and the consequent suspension of issuance of new visas for Ecuadorians that is a requirement to visit Mexico like tourists (were issued 5 thousand visas quarterly), which has generated greater low demand on the route and possible internal restructuring of the airline in order to reduce low-profitability routes and operating costs..

It is worth remembering that this route was already facing a reduction in supply shortly after celebrating 10 years flying to Ecuador, since today it operates only with 4 weekly frequencies, and if we remember years ago, This route came to have two daily flights from Monday to Sunday with airplanes Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8/9.

What options do affected passengers have??

Aeroméxico has communicated that it is contacting affected passengers to offer them the following options:

  1. i) Refund in the form of EMD valid at 100% of the original value of the ticket (independent of point of sale).
    • Valid for travel on any Aeroméxico route.
    • Validity of 1 year from the date of issue.
  1. ii) Refund in original payment form.

Option 2. Protection with Aeroméxico.

  • Change of date is allowed without charge or rate difference, respecting the same route and paid cabin.
  • Change of route is allowed without charge, rate difference applies.

Important information:

  • Aeroméxico has no responsibility to cover additional costs such as ground transportation, lodging, foods, etc

  1. Nicolás, I am affected by the recent measure chosen by Aeroméxico, On Sunday I received an email stating that my return flight has been cancelled.. In this way, I started making inquiries, and in fact there are no flights until December 2024.

The reason for my trip is to study 30 May to 07 of July, and I have been noticeably affected by this measure, thus, when I contact them, They have told me that they can give me a partial refund every time I travel to Mexico this 30 of May, but I honestly don't know what the partial refund would be., I definitely can't cancel the trip., I'm not going to do it.

Nevertheless, I thought it would be good to take the refund and buy a return flight to Ecuador on the same date or a few days later, And here is my question: what do you think?? what is your recommendation?.

Do you think it would be good to take the option 2 What is “Protection with Aeroméxico”, in which the change of route is allowed without charge and the fare difference applies?, that is to say, I ask for a refund and change the route, is what I think.

I hope you can give me ideas. Thanks a lot, I am a follower of yours.

    1. Hello Patricio, I would take the refund and look for another flight, since using another route from them does not help much, since it would take you to Peru for example, I don't know if that helps you.

It's true, yesterday they notified me. I had a flight for 18 December and they placed it for me 19 from December. I called and the explanation was that due to government decisions in Ecuador they were not going to have operations until 19 from December

    1. The reality is that it is because there is no issuance of visas to Mexico that the embassy closed due to the known events., The demand fell and hopefully by December everything will be fixed.
