Lufthansa Group advances with the modernization of the fleet and purchases ten new state-of-the-art long-haul aircraft from Boeing and Airbus.

Lufthansa Group is accelerating the modernization of its fleet with new fuel-efficient aircraft replacing older types on short-haul routes, medium and long distance. As a result, The Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG decided to purchase ten long-haul aircraft:

  • Cinco Airbus A350-900 y cinco Boeing B787-9.

These aircraft will be operated by Lufthansa and will strengthen the premium offering of 5 stars of the Group's main brand.

As part of the long-haul fleet renewal program, will be delivered a total of 175 new aircraft to Lufthansa Group airlines this decade.

Boeing 787-9

the first boeing 787-9 is scheduled to fly Lufthansa next winter, and others will follow in the first half of the 2022. Today's decision raises Boeing's total number of firm orders 787-9 y Boeing 777-9 a 45 aircraft.

Due to the dramatic impact of the coronavirus pandemic on global aviation, planes that had been ordered by some airlines could not be delivered in the last twelve months. Lufthansa held talks with Boeing and found a way to buy five 787-9 that were already manufactured. At the same time, The Group reached an agreement with Boeing on a restructured delivery plan.

Airbus A350-900

The five newly ordered Airbus A350-900s will be delivered between 2027 and 2028. This brings the total number of firm orders for the A350-900 to 45 planes. The Lufthansa Group also agreed with Airbus to restructure planned deliveries..

In addition to renewing its long-haul fleet, Lufthansa is also focusing on the latest technology, maximum efficiency and the highest level of customer comfort on short-haul routes. Only in the current year, Lufthansa will receive a new fuel-efficient Airbus A320 family aircraft for short and medium-haul routes on average every month. The delivery of others 107 Airbus A320 family aircraft is planned until 2027.

With the Airbus A350-900, the boeing 777-9 and the Boeing 787-9, Lufthansa Group will operate the most fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft in terms of consumption per passenger.

On average, the new aircraft will only consume approximately 2,5 liters of kerosene per passenger. This is approximately a 30 percent less than many current and previously operated long-range aircraft models and will have an equally positive impact on the Group's carbon footprint.

Current plans call for an initial fleet reduction and, at the same time, extensive modernization in the future. the boeing 787-9 and the Airbus A350-900 will essentially replace the four-engine A340 long-haul aircraft as part of this process.

The new fuel-efficient aircraft will reduce operating costs by around 15 percent compared to the models being replaced.

Despite harsh cuts to ground and cabin employees, The bailouts requested from the German government focus on avoiding bankruptcy but also on modernizing its long-haul fleet. Without a doubt getting rid of the Airbus A340-300/600 makes sense operating the Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 787-9 although the Airbus A380 and Boeing are still stored 747-8 They are a headache due to the current pandemic. Lufthansa is traditionally a mixed manufacturer operator., It is still difficult to see that future Boeing 777-9 go full for 2023 as the developing world continues to experience strict lockdowns. Air France KLM, They were right not to order planes larger than the Boeing 777-300ER.
