the australian airline Qantas prepares for the longest flights in the world when confirming order by 12 Airbus A350-1000.

After having launched the Project Sunrise in august 2019 and have agreed to opt for Airbus for this purpose in December of that same year, Qantas is ready to move forward with his goal: have the longest flights in the world.

But this will not be an easy task and there will be many details to resolve in this process that included an interesting "battle" between Airbus and Boeing to be the supplier of the aircraft that will allow Qantas to fly direct non-stop between:

  • Australia – New York
  • Australia – London

having been Airbus widely the winner by demonstrating for example ,the capabilities of its Airbus A350s on the Singapore Airlines route to New York, the flight project 20 and more hours is now taking shape and Qantas will take a huge step in improving its connectivity and also paving the way for even longer flights connecting ultra-distant regions..

Qantas will use Airbus A350s for future longer flights

The A350-1000 was selected by Qantas following an evaluation known as Project Sunrise and will allow the airline to operate commercial flights longest in the world. These will include linking Sydney and Melbourne with destinations such as London and New York non-stop for the first time ever.. With a premium design, Qantas will also use the A350 fleet on other international services.

Qantas Group CEO, Alan Joyce, said:

“New types of aircraft make new things possible. That is what makes today's announcement so important for the national airline and for a country like Australia., where air travel is crucial. The A350 and Project Sunrise will make any city just a flight away from Australia. "It is the last frontier and the final solution to the tyranny of distance."

These planes and their special configuration will have the autonomy for direct flights between Australia and any city in the world.. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 turbofan engines which are a 25 percent more fuel efficient than previous generation aircraft.

will transport 238 passengers in four classes (First, Business, Premium Economy, Economy), with more than 40 percent of cabin dedicated to premium seating. Compared to more than 300 seats on competing airlines. The cabin is specially configured to improve comfort on long flights and includes a wellness area in
the center of the aircraft for walking and stretching exercises.

Direct flights to Paris, Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro (and more destinations in Latin America) and even other regions open their doors thanks to this project.

More Airbus aircraft

further, Qantas also confirmed the additional order for 20 Airbus A220 and 20 Airbus A321XLR to improve Australia's domestic connectivity on flights over 5 hours.

The A220 and A321XLR were chosen under an evaluation called Project Winton. The aircraft will be used by the Qantas Group on domestic services throughout the country., that can extend to more than five hours. What's more, the A321XLR offers range capability for flights from Australia to South East Asia, allowing Qantas Group to open new direct routes. The A220 and A321XLR fleets will be powered by Pratt engines & Whitney GTF.

This agreement is in addition to the existing request for 109 A320neo family aircraft, including the A321XLR for the low-cost subsidiary of Qantas Group, Jetstar.
