During the first six months of 2022 recovery has been strengthened airline industry thanks to the release of travel restriction.

Some regions with better pace and just starting to show signs of a real recovery, the most affected industry along with the sightseeing, continues to show favorable signs of returning to expected normalcy and profitability.

Especially this last factor is beginning to arrive again in some airlines and air groups, driven by a favorable summer season in the northern hemisphere, despite massive cancellations due to lack of staff, mainly for some companies and airports.

Aerial recovery during the first semester 2022

Although there is still a long way to go until the end of the 2023 or beginning of 2024, there are very positive indicators to review so far during the first semester of 2022. Thanks to the monthly newsletter of THERE IT IS we can collect interesting data:

  • Domestic traffic for June 2022 increased a 5,2% compared to the same period of the previous year. Strong improvements in most markets, combined with the relaxation of some Omicron-related lockdown restrictions in the Chinese domestic market, contributed to the result. Total domestic traffic for June 2022 was from 81,4% from the level of June 2019.
  • International traffic increased by 229,5% compared to June 2021. The lifting of travel restrictions in most of Asia-Pacific is helping the recovery. International RPKs for June 2022 they reached the 65,0% from June levels 2019.

Total traffic in June 2022 increased a 76,2% compared to June 2021. Worldwide, traffic is now in the 70,8% from pre-crisis levels.

As to Latin America, traffic increased a 136,6% compared to the same month 2021. June capacity increased by 107,4% and load factor increased 10,3 percentage points up to 83,3%. After leading the regions in load factor for 20 consecutive months, Latin America fell back to third place in June.

By your side, ACI-LAC during a webinar on aviation trends shared more information about this process:

By reviewing only the international market for Latin America, the region is very close to reaching levels of the 2019 with a 92% actual, thanks also to the growth of the airlines of low cost and inauguration of new routes that did not previously operate.

It is quite positive to see green numbers than the red ones of the pandemic. In any case, the high cost of oil translates into higher costs for kerosene and consequently for the cost of tickets.. This week there has been a reduction in the cost per barrel and if it continues, flights would in theory be more accessible to everyone and the recovery of traffic in our region even better.
