For the unique final of the Copa Libertadores 2022 to be held at the Stadium Barcelona on Guayaquil, the airport prepares for historical record of flights and passengers.
For at least four days the city of Guayaquil will experience a unique football party in its history, when taking place there 29 October the “Single Final of the Copa Libertadores 2022”, that in this edition they will face Flamengo versus Athletico Paranaense in what promises to be a full house at the Banco Pichincha Stadium in Barcelona.

Only on these special flights, without counting all the options of regular international flights with connection in Panama, Lima, Bogota, Santiago and more, makes us take an estimate close to the 32 thousand passengers who will arrive in the country by air.
In order to meet this special demand, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) has ready the 'Air Traffic Flow Plan' that will be implemented in the face of the increase in aircraft that are expected to arrive in Ecuador for the final of the Copa Libertadores.
The document contemplates that the 'José Joaquín de Olmedo' International Airport will have an approximate increase of 200 aircraft, on charter and private flights, to regular operation. Against this will be enabled 176 aircraft parking points additional to those available at the Guayaquil Airport. These points will be at Manta airports, Salinas, Latacunga and Quito, as well as on the platforms of the Ecuadorian Air Force in the Main Port.
In a first phase of the plan, for the arrival of international flights, It has been determined that the landing of aircraft will take place every 5 minutes, with a distance of 15 miles between each, with the aim that the ATC workload is sustainable over time, avoid fatigue of aeronautical personnel and maintain the safety of air operations.
In a second phase, after the sporting event, In the national airports that served as parking points, the program called GDP (Ground Delay Program), through which arrival times are assigned (slots) to Guayaquil airport, so that they can pick up passengers in an orderly manner and start their international flight. This will allow sequential outputs to be made, organized and on schedule, to minimize possible delays.
Finally, to deal with this traffic, Improvement works are being carried out at the Guayaquil Airport, extending platforms and creating new temporary remote parking spaces for these aircraft, as shown in these images.:
