Emirates has operated its first historic demonstration flight on a Boeing 777-300ER, fueling one of its engines with aviation fuel 100% sustainable (PURE).
The flight took off from the International Airport of Dubai (DXB), and was commanded by Captain Fali Vajifdar and Captain Khalid Nasser Akram, and flew over the coast of Dubai for more than an hour.
The demonstration flight powered by PURE is of particular importance since the Arab Emirates States declared to 2023 as the “Year of Sustainability”. The year will showcase the UAE's commitment to seek innovative solutions to challenges such as energy, climate change and other issues related to sustainability. The flight supports the industry's collective efforts to enable a future of flight 100% SAF and help advance the UAE's sustainability goals.
Emirates demonstration flight, the first in the Middle East and North Africa to operate at 100% with SAF, supports broader efforts to reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions as the industry looks to increase its use of SAF. The flights will also help refine the playbook for future SAF demonstrations and support future certification in which the 100% of SAF fuel for aircraft. Currently, SAF is approved for use on all aircraft, but only in mixtures of up to 50 % with conventional jet fuel.
Emirates worked together with its partners GE Aerospace, Boeing, Honeywell, Neste and Virent to acquire and develop a SAF blend that closely replicates the properties of combustible for conventional aircraft. At each mixing ratio, A large number of measurements of chemical and physical properties of the fuel were carried out. After multiple laboratory tests and rigorous trials, They arrived at a blend ratio that reflected the qualities of the jet fuel. Eighteen tons of SAF were mixed, composed of HEFA-SPK provided by Neste (esters and hydroprocessed fatty acids and synthetic paraffinic kerosene) y HDO-SAK from Virent (hydrodeoxygenated synthetic aromatic kerosene). The 100% SAF supplied a GE90 engine, while conventional jet fuel supplied the other engine.
The test flight further demonstrates the compatibility of the specially blended SAF as a source of combustible safe and reliable. The promising outcome of this initiative also adds to the body of industry data and research on SAF blends at higher ratios., paving the way for standardization and future approval of 100% of direct SAF as a replacement for jet fuel, far above the 50 current. % mixing limit.
The airline already runs a comprehensive flight efficiency program combustible that actively researches and implements ways to reduce fuel consumption and unnecessary emissions, whenever feasible from an operational point of view. Some of the most significant initiatives of the program include the operation of "flexible runways" or flexible routes: Partnering with air navigation service providers to create the most efficient flight plan for each flight. These efforts have been ongoing since 2003, and Emirates has been working with THERE IT IS to extend this routing system worldwide as standard operating procedure where possible.
Emirates' first flight powered by SAF blended with jet fuel was in 2017, operating from Chicago O'Hare Airport on a Boeing 777. He received his first delivery of a A380 powered by SAF in 2020, and also loaded 32 tons of SAF for its flights from Stockholm that same year.
