Did you know that the 17 July is historically the deadliest day of the aviation history? In this installment we tell you why and how it all started in Ecuador. Foto Air Crash Investigation
As we like to review in this space, aviation has endless curiosities and even up myths, where it stands out for example «The rule of three in aviation» as one of the most important to highlight and that generates the most debate.
Just in these past days on Twitter a very important account @OnDisasters, that reviews the history of air accidents in the world day by day published very important information: «as of the date of 17 July is dark for aviation safety. From 1945, there has been at least 16 major plane crashes on this day, with a total of 902 victims."
This information caught my attention and when I saw the graph, the surprise was greater when I saw that this statistical coincidence began in Ecuador on 1946.
17 July the worst day for aviation
Was a 17 July 1946 when a Curtiss C-46D registration HC-SCA of the Ecuadorian airline ANDESA – Aerovías Nacionales del Ecuador S.A had an accident with 30 fatalities in what is now the El Vergel Shopping Center after a frustrated landing, incredibly, two people survived the fatal accident.
For even more surprise, This same accident was the first historically recorded in Ecuador and the first registered also for the city of Cuenca and from this event, coincidence or not, Fatal accidents have been repeated throughout the history of aviation until the last one that happened in 2017.
The important aviation portal dedicated to the history of aviation accidents Aviation Safety Network details the following:
The 17 July is the worst day in aviation history with 902 deaths in 16 plane crashes, according to ASN data. This includes both accidents and events involving illegal interference..
The average over the period 1946-2020 It is 235 deaths in 11 accidents.
