This year, more than 2.550 kg of waste, and now the cycle is closed by transforming plastic waste into an ecological means of transport. The initiative promotes the circular economy, promotes sustainable mobility and strengthens environmental awareness in the fishing communities of the archipelago.
The project was also extended to Guayaquil supporting the Pescando Plásticas program, with the aim of delivering another bicycle to the members of the National Federation of Artisanal Fishing Cooperatives of Ecuador (FENACOPEC), who actively participate in garbage collection in the mangroves. Thanks to this effort, during the year they managed to withdraw 73 tons of waste from the Gulf of Guayaquil, contributing significantly to the protection of fauna and the preservation of this ecosystem.
The collaboration of LATAM Airlines Ecuador, through the Program Solidarity Plane, and DHL was key to the management and transfer of recyclable material. The bicycles were made by the Ecuadorian company Re-Cicletas, thus strengthening a sustainability chain that integrates the public sectors, private and community around the protection of the environment and the promotion of innovative solutions.
This alliance exemplifies how the synergy between actors in the sector can generate positive and concrete impacts on both communities and the environment.. “CProtecting our oceans and marine biodiversity is a shared responsibility. This bicycle not only symbolizes circular economy, but also the union of efforts to protect an ecosystem that sustains life and must last over time, both in Galapagos like in Guayaquil”, highlighted Melissa Aguirre, NIRSA Corporate Affairs Manager.
The TUNACONS Foundation has led garbage collection days for years, actively involving artisanal fishermen in the conservation of the seas.. “These types of actions show that sustainability goes beyond responsible fishing. It is working together with communities to take care of the ocean, “generate opportunities and promote a culture of recycling and circular economy that benefits everyone”, expressed Guillermo Morán, Executive Director of TUNACONS.
With this activity, NIRSA and the TUNACONS Foundation reaffirm their commitment to the conservation of the marine ecosystem and the sustainable development of artisanal fishing communities, strengthening its collaboration network with local and international allies to keep the coasts clean, protect biodiversity and promote innovative solutions to plastic pollution.
