I had the immense pleasure of being one of the passengers on board the inaugural flight that marks the return of the direct route of LATAM Airlines between Guayaquil José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) and John F. International Airport. Kennedy the New York (JFK). This connection not only unites two key cities, but also consolidates the airline's commitment to Ecuador's international connectivity.
This reopening, that significantly expands tourism and commerce options, is a tangible benefit of the strategic alliance between LATAM and Delta Air Lines, facilitating direct connection between South America and the United States. Too, reconnects on a stopover to Cuenca with this key destination for Ecuadorian migrants.
LATAM Ecuador restarted flights to New York from Guayaquil
Monday 1 from December to 2025, the emotion was felt in the atmosphere. The Airbus A320neo, the aircraft designated for this daily route, took off punctually at 4:30 p.m. from Guayaquil. I witnessed a crucial and long-awaited operation. The flight had an occupancy close to 95%, demonstrating the great interest and need that existed for this direct connection.

Ceremony and flight
The day began with an official celebration in the departure lounge of the Guayaquil airport. The symbolic ribbon cutting welcomed me and the other “first passengers” bound for New York.
As Monica Fistrovic expressed it, CEO of LATAM Airlines Ecuador, this route is an engine of opportunities: “This route, so missed, represents the return of great opportunities to directly connect Ecuador with the United States, facilitating not only tourism, but also the cultural and commercial exchange between both countries. “We are proud to add benefits to the country within the framework of our Joint Venture with Delta.”
LATAM will operate this route with airplanes Airbus A320neo, offering the following daily itinerary:
- Flight XL1454 take off from Guayaquil to 16:30 hours and lands in New York JFK at 23:00 pm with a duration of 6 hours and 30 minutes.
- Flight XL1453 take away from New York JFK to 00:30 am and land back in Guayaquil at 07:20 am the next day with a duration of 6 hours and 50 minutes.
- Frequency: daily
With the reopening of this operation, and after having experienced it first hand, I am sure that this route will be a success and that we will be able to see a consolidation of the route in the medium term., more frequencies or greater seating capacity offered between both cities.
