We review the latest 9 months of bad news for Ecuadorian aviation with the different routes, frequencies and airlines that have stopped operating in Ecuador.
I've said it before, talking about bad news for our aviation is what I like least about this blog, but it is part of the aeronautical information that is generated and not everything can always be good, but specifically, the last 9 months have not been entirely positive for Ecuador in terms of air news and commercial aviation.
In this space we will not talk about domestic frequencies, but we will focus on the reality of the international air market.
Ecuador with fewer routes and airlines
Not everything started this 2024, but the bad news began to appear from the 2023, that if we take the pre-pandemic there are still airlines like Air Canada, Air France and GOAL that we have not managed to recover along with direct flights to Santiago from Quito, the thing is that the 2019 we were full of good news, growth and new airlines, now everything has changed.
I'm going to go over the different airlines that have left, routes that have been cancelled/suspended and frequencies that have been reduced, and I think there are some that I could be escaping:
- Avianca Ecuador stopped flying between Quito and Cancun the 19 October 2023 (operated 3 times a week).
- Viva Aerobus stopped flying between Cancun and Quito on 8 of January of 2024 (operated 3 times a week).
- LATAM Ecuador stopped operating between Guayaquil and Bogotá since 31 of January of 2024.
- Conviasa stopped flying to Quito and Guayaquil after no more than 1 month of operations in January 2024.
- KLM reduced from its traditional 7 weekly flights to Quito and Guayaquil from Amsterdam to operate 5 weekly flights currently.
- Wingo stopped flying to Quito and Guayaquil on 7 april 2024, added up to 8 weekly flights to Ecuador depending on season.
- JetBlue stopped flying to Quito from Fort Lauderdale from the 13 June 2024, operated with up to 1 daily flight.
- Aeromexico will suspend its flights to Quito from 1 from July to 18 from December 2024, work with 4 weekly flights (came to operate 2 daily flights).
- American Airlines reduce by 2 a 1 daily flight on the traditional Miami route – I remove between the 4 of September and the 5 November 2024.
- JetSMART suspends its flights to Guayaquil from Lima beginning the 27 from August to December 2024.
- JetBlue stops flying the route between Fort Lauderdale and Guayaquil from the next 6 of January of 2025, route that operates with one daily flight.
And if we quickly touch upon the domestic we could highlight the closure of Equair 30 September 2023, but we could review that in another installment.
Not everything is bad
Among so much bad news, Other airlines that have opted for the country have been highlighted, as was the recent case of JetSMART which has been operating since March and April in Quito and Guayaquil respectively, being the only increase of new airline in our airspace so far this year. 2024.
Too, Copa Airlines opted for a higher frequency between Panama City and Manta, route that is barely going to celebrate a year since its launch, that's good.
LATAM Airlines put more flights between Quito and Guayaquil towards Lima, consolidated the daily flight to Santiago de Chile and the flight to Miami continues with very good results.
Iberia and Air Europa flights increased to Ecuador, where the first rose to 7 weekly flights to Quito, at the end of 2024 tries to fly 5 weekly to Guayaquil and the second rose to 5 weekly flights in its triangulation from Madrid.
Avianca was not left behind and inaugurated the unprecedented direct route between Quito and Orlando with two weekly flights, increased frequencies from Bogotá and to New York from Quito.
Arajet increases its flights to Ecuador and separates Quito and Guayaquil again, which begin to operate independently, going from 2 current weekly 4 frequencies from the 20 of June.
No less important is the increase, I would say permanent, from Delta Air Lines on its route to Quito operating unchanged with the Boeing 767 instead of 757.
And I almost forgot to mention that Aeroregional a weekly charter frequency began to operate between Quito and Caracas (maiquetia) with its fleet of Boeing 737s since December 2023.
We await the closure of this, for now negative year, with good news or at least a balance in the market, where there is no further drop in air traffic as was the first quarter, where Ecuador was the only country in Latin America and the Caribbean to present a contraction in travelers transported.
We will continue to inform you and hopefully there will be good news soon. Ecuador and its airports have a strong path to recover what has been lost in this time, plus the pandemic that is still pending.
If you know of any positive news or any other reduction that I may have missed, let me know in the comments.

JetSmart opera 4 weekly flights instead of 3. I hope that by the end of the year Avianca will operate more flights to Cuenca and Buenos Aires. We also wait for the start of Sky Ecuador or Ecuacondor or some progress from Ecuatoriana.
It's true, JetSmart is currently flying with 4 weekly flights to Quito instead of three, while in Guayaquil it dropped to two frequencies of the 3 that flew.
Hi Nicolas, Comonidndocas, we hope that Ecuador's international air transport statistics for the first half of this year improve, as Delta's fleet changes, and the increases in frequencies of the other airlines add to transportation and achieve a positive result in relation to the 2023.
Let's hope so, we will be very attentive to the statistics!
Hello there, Nicholas. Aeroregional will begin operating flights from Quito to Cali via Esmeraldas tomorrow, giving life to an airport without commercial operation since Avioandes canceled its Dash 8 in April of last year. It will also begin 7 of July (until the 16 of August) seasonal charter flights from Quito to Porlamar.
Greetings from Spain from a regular reader!!
Thanks Alex, see the Aeroregional, but I'm not sure they will start flying to Cali, Your page no longer sells it for the opening date.. About Porlamar, They are charter flights also like those to Punta Cana, Cartagena or San Andrés. Thanks for the contribution and support!
