The group Lufthansa is acquiring 22 longer-haul aircraft of the latest generation to replace the Boeing 747 and Airbus A340.

Among the requested aircraft are:

  • ten Airbus A350-1000 passenger aircraft
  • five Airbus A350-900 passenger aircraft

The orders were approved today by the Supervisory Board of parent company Deutsche Lufthansa AG. Based on list prices, the order has a total value of about 7.500 million US dollars and is in line with the Group's medium-term financial planning.

With today's orders included, the Grupo Lufthansa will receive 108 state-of-the-art long-haul aircraft, As the Airbus A350-1000, el Airbus A350-900, the Boeing 787-9 and the Boeing 777-9, in the next years. With that, the Group will operate the quietest long-haul aircraft, profitable and economical currently in service. On average, the new planes consume only 2,5 liters of fuel per passenger for each 100 kilometres, a 30 percent less than previous aircraft types.

The new long-haul aircraft will also replace older aircraft types. In the medium term future, six of these sub-fleets will be withdrawn from service: planes with four engines Boeing 747-400, Airbus A340-600 and Airbus A340-300 and the others with two motors like the Boeing 777-200, Boeing 767-300 and Airbus A330-200. This will reduce the quadjet contingent within the Lufthansa Group fleet to less than 15 percent: before the pandemic, the quadjets accounted for about 50 percent of the aircraft fleet of the entire group.

In addition to the agreement on the purchase of the new aircraft, Airbus and Lufthansa they have also signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” to further strengthen their cooperation in the field of sustainability and future technologies. This includes the intensified use of sustainable aviation fuels, optimizing operations through more efficient flight management and exploring the use of hydrogen.
